1. CATEGORIES
The categories 1-11 for the award are thematic to accommodate various types of projects. The category 12 is Research and Publication. IAB members of the nominated built/realized project need to submit the built/realized project under the category most appropriate to their projects. Mixed Use projects may be submitted under the category applicable to the predominant use of the project.
Awards in each category are based on a two-tier system, in decreasing order of merit i.e IAB Awards and Commendations, which is further explained below.
CATEGORY 1: DWELLING
1a. Individual: Single family residence
1b. Collective: Apartment block, multifamily housing, hostel and dormitory etc.
1c. Leisure: Vacation house, farm house, etc.
CATEGORY 2: HOSPITALITY AND WELLBEING
Hotel, resort, spa, rejuvenation (alternative therapies) centre, meditation centre, daycare, senior citizens home etc.
CATEGORY 3: EDUCATION
School, college, university, madrasa, training centre etc.
CATEGORY 4: HEALTH
Hospital, health complex, diagnostic centre, clinic, rehabilitation centre etc.
CATEGORY 5: CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT
Restaurant, museum, art gallery, library, cineplex, theatre or concert hall, stadium, religious building, community centre, club etc.
CATEGORY 6: SOCIAL, PUBLIC AND CIVIC
Railway or MRT station, airport, bus terminal, police station, embassy, government administrative building, jail or correction center etc.
CATEGORY 7: COMMERCIAL AND BUSINESS
Commercial building, office building, shop, shopping mall, bank, restaurant, retail etc.
CATEGORY 8: INDUSTRIAL AND UTILITARIAN
Factory, industry, storage facility, warehouse, production plants, hazardous building, services etc.
CATEGORY 9: CONSERVATION AND REVITALIZATION
Preservation, consolidation, restoration, adaptive reuse, etc. of tangible cultural heritage buildings/sites
CATEGORY 10: URBAN INTERVENTION AND LANDSCAPE
Non-building project or urban design, landscape, amphitheater etc.
CATEGORY 11: OTHERS
Miscellaneous projects, temporary structure, pavilion etc. which does not qualify in the above 1-10 categories.
CATEGORY 12: RESEARCH & PUBLICATION
This Award has 2 sub-categories–‘Research’ and ‘Publication’. Here, the IAB member for the Research award is considered as the principal researcher and that for Publication as an author.
- Research: The ‘Research’ category includes only original applied research/ fundamental research/ design research. Any publication (like journal or conference paper/ article/ book chapter/ newspaper article) based on research may be submitted for the ‘Research’ category.
- Publication: The ‘Publication’ category refers to only published books.
2. TYPES OF AWARDS
a. IAB Awards:
This is the highest award in each category of the IAB Awards. The award is given to the work judged to be the most significant for the advancement of architecture or a work of excellence demonstrating architectural skills that contributes to the advancement of architecture in a category. More than one award may be given in any category.
b. Commendations:
This is for projects of special merit, demonstrating significant architectural skill that have not won an IAB Award. More than one Commendation may be given in a category.
If the Jury do not find any project worthy of Awards or commendations in a category, they are not required to confer any Awards or Commendations, regardless of the number of entries received.
